We meld research, strategy, and design to create solutions that not only grow businesses, but also enhance everyday lives. We’re a culture of curious thinkers who collaborate in a hands-on environment where taking a different perspective is paramount.

We’re looking for a Senior Service Designer to join our design strategy practice in San Francisco.

You’ll be expected to interpret research findings, formulate actionable insights, and drive the development of service design that’s vested in solid business intelligence. And you must be passionate about nurturing design thinking in others. Ideally, you’ll add depth of experience to our service design offering, helping to define and amplify design strategy across our business.

Responsibilities

  • Help our clients – and Sutherland Labs – think big
  • Lead strategy and service design projects to create business transformation for clients
  • Develop, design, and facilitate workshops, sprints, and trainings
  • Conduct qualitative design research alongside the research team
  • Take part in business development activities by identifying new opportunities, attending client meetings, and writing proposals
  • Work closely with the Director of Design Strategy to articulate our service design offering – both internally and externally – through leading-by-doing and thought leadership
  • Stay up-to-date on trends and developments within the field of service design, contributing to the broader service design community

You Are

  • A systems thinker who employs creativity to generate original ideas, solve complex problems, and understand the forces required to effect change
  • A natural facilitator, presenter, and storyteller who communicates clearly and compellingly – whether it’s through excellent writing and verbal skills, or visual design skills.
  • A collaborator, employing excellent interpersonal skills to build rapport with colleagues and clients
  • A voracious learner, using your time at Sutherland Labs to build mastery around the skills you need in both your work and life
  • A generous and humane leader
  • A champion of user-centered design principles
  • Experienced in design strategy, service design, and design thinking processes
  • Familiar with qualitative user research methodologies
  • Able to work fluidly across the whole design process
  • Used to complex, time-sensitive projects, working with multidisciplinary teams
  • Comfortable navigating multiple stakeholder groups
  • Used to working with or within large complex organizations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in design, research, business management, or a related field; Masters in design strategy, user experience design, service design, or relevant discipline preferred
  • 5+ years of end-to-end service design experience where you have been responsible for project leadership and client relationships; past work in an agency setting or in-house team, working across a range of roles preferred
  • Eligibility to work in the US permanently without sponsorship
  • Availability for global and domestic travel
  • Position is based in San Francisco
