Freelance Design Researchers

Sutherland Labs is an experience design agency with offices in London and San Francisco. We meld research, strategy, and design to create solutions that not only grow businesses, but also enhance everyday lives. We are currently looking for freelance researchers to work on upcoming projects of 2-3 months, that require some travel to different countries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with our research teams to support user experience projects, conducting user research, field studies, usability testing and other activities
  • Support the creation of journey maps, personas and other means of visual communication to bring research insights to life

Education and Experience

  • At least undergraduate degree in Design, User Experience, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field. In lieu of degree, relevant skills or equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of research experience within the User Experience and/or Design in a commercial environment
  • An understanding and demonstration of user-centered design principles.
  • Strong written and communication skills

Job Requirements

  • Eligibility to work in the UK without sponsorship
  • Global and domestic travel is required
  • While scope of these projects is global, planning, analysis and other collaborative activities will take place in our London Labs. Freelance researchers must therefore be available and able to travel to and work in London.

Senior Design Researcher

Role

As a Senior Design Researcher you’re on a mission to uncover human needs and behaviors, to inform the development of smart, inspired, human-centered solutions. You’re able to dig deeper to uncover unexpected insights. You have a firm grasp of how content, brand, and design work together to create an optimal user experience. You’re up to date with the latest research methods and have experience applying them. You also see the big picture, working with stakeholders to understand the broader business strategy that informs the solution. You thrive amid different perspectives and collaborate fluidly with cross-functional teams. And you’re able to mentor early-career peers, coaching a design thinking approach.

Responsibilities

  • Create high-quality research deliverables, including insights reports, journey maps, service blueprints, process flows, storyboards, video highlights (with support from our in-house visual designers)
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team and support all stages of the design process, from early problem definition and design research through to implementation
  • Lead client meetings and co-creation workshops to capture business requirements and explore customer experience challenges
  • Respond creatively to bid requests, scope projects, and help win new work
  • Be an ambassador for design thinking, innovation, and human-centered design
  • Confidently lead and support multiple projects and client engagements simultaneously
  • Mentor and manage junior team members

You Have

San Francisco

Service Design Contractor

We combine research, strategy, and design to create solutions that not only grow businesses, but also enhance everyday lives. We are an agency with the best of both worlds: in-house clientele from our parent company along with our own external client base.

We’re looking for a Senior Service Designer to join our San Francisco team, based in the downtown financial district, for a 6-month contract. Possibility for a full-time conversion after contract, based on performance and business need.

Role

Your core strength is an ability to envision new futures and catalyze strategies to get there. You work to identify and design human-centered experiences that connect the dots between people, business, products, and services. You’re able to ground imaginative systems thinking using service design methodologies, including ethnographic research, co-creation, journey mapping, blueprinting, experience prototyping, and user testing.

You’ll collaborate with design researchers to uncover research findings, formulate actionable insights, and shape service design that’s vested in solid business intelligence. You bring experience translating insights into service design artefacts that drive projects to the next stage. And, you must be able to describe how you approach nurturing design thinking in others.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on service design projects to create business transformation for clients and experience transformation for their customers
  • Develop, design, and facilitate workshops, sprints and training
  • Collaborate in the execution of qualitative design research alongside our specialist researchers
  • Create high-quality service design deliverables, including insights reports, journey maps, service blueprints, process flows, storyboards (with support from our in-house visual designers)
  • Engage with stakeholders, taking a prominent role in client meetings and co-creation workshops to capture business requirements and explore customer experience challenges
  • Respond creatively to bid requests, scope projects, and help win new work
  • Be an ambassador for human-centered design, helping to articulate our service design offerings
  • Stay up-to-date on trends and developments within the field of service design, contributing to the broader service design community

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in design, research, business management, or a related field; Masters in design strategy, user experience design, service design, or relevant discipline preferred
  • End-to-end service design experience; past work in an agency setting or in-house team preferred
  • Comfortable with industry-standard tools such as Adobe CC, Sketch, and G-Suite. Video and audio editing/post-production capabilities preferred
  • Able to provide examples of your service design outputs, showcasing broad professional experience, application of service design methodologies, and diverse deliverables
