Freelance Design Researcher

We are currently looking for freelance researchers based in the UK and US to work on upcoming projects. Working arrangements are flexible – you could be embedded in the team for a period of time or join the team on a project-by-project basis. Projects span evaluative and generative research and often involve collaboration with broader practices within our organization, such as analytics, market intelligence, experience transformation, and industry verticals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute qualitative research utilizing a range of methodologies
  • Produce high-quality research deliverables, such as insights reports, journey maps, service blueprints, storyboards, and video highlights (with support from our in-house visual designers)
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and support all stages of the design process, from early problem definition and design research through to implementation
  • Participate in client meetings and co-creation workshops to capture business requirements and explore customer experience challenges
  • Be an ambassador for design thinking, innovation, and human-centered design
  • Support a broad range of projects and client engagements

You have

  • Broad experience of UX methods and, ideally also of Employee Experience (EX) projects
  • Examples of your research outputs, ideally showcasing your professional experience
  • Experience working on complex, time-sensitive projects (B2B and B2C) with multidisciplinary teams across complex organizations
  • Strong written communication and verbal presentation skills
  • Ability to embrace the unknown and inspire new ways of thinking
  • Familiarity with quantitative and mixed-methods methodologies is a plus
  • We are a design agency, so design experience is a plus as well

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Anthropology, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field; Masters preferred (or equivalent professional experience)
  • 4 years’ experience in the industry is preferred
  • Eligibility to work in the US and/or UK

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support a wide range of user experience projects for clients, conducting user research, field studies, usability testing, and other activities
  • Create high-quality research deliverables, including insights reports, journey maps, service blueprints, process flows, storyboards, video highlights (with support from our in-house visual designers)
  • Attend client meetings and co-creation workshops to capture business requirements and explore customer experience challenges
  • Help respond to bid requests, scope projects, and help win new work

You Have

  • Broad experience of UX methods and, ideally also of EX projects
  • 3+ years of research experience within the User Experience and/or Design in a commercial environment; of if you don’t fit that mould, a strong point of view on how your experience would contribute
  • Examples of how you would apply research methodologies to different challenges, and ways in which you would deliver these outputs to our clients
  • Strong understanding and demonstration of human-centered design principles
  • Strong verbal, written, and organisational skills
  • Ability to embrace the unknown and inspire new ways of thinking
  • We are a design agency, so experience of design is a plus as well.

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and support all stages of the design process, from early problem definition and design research through to implementation

  • Creatively develop bids, scope projects, and help win new work
  • Mentor and manage junior team members
  • Advocate the team and our work, e.g. publishing papers, attending industry events, writing blogs, being active on social media

Education and Experience

  • Typically a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Anthropology, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field is useful, with a Masters preferred; however exceptional candidates may instead have experience that serves as an equivalent
    6+ years of research experience for a UX, Design or Digital organisation
  • A strong understanding and demonstration of user-centered and design principles, and planning, leading and managing research projects
  • Strong business development experience, from developing new client relationships through to account management
  • Demonstrable experience of applying research within a large organization, tackling complex projects that may involve numerous simultaneous stakeholders and delivering at a solutions-driven level
  • Experience with industry standard design and research tools (e.g. Axure, Omnigraffle, Balsamiq Mockups, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.)

You Have

  • Bachelors degree in  Psychology, Anthropology, Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field. In lieu of degree, relevant skills or equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years of research experience within the User Experience and/or Design in a commercial environment; of if you don’t fit that mould, a strong point of view on how your experience would contribute
  • An understanding and demonstration of user-centered design methods and principles
  • Strong verbal, written, organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to approach complex problem spaces, embrace the unknown and adopt new ways of thinking
  • Comfort in working both collaboratively and independently on research tasks that vary in approach scale, scope, timeframe and methodologies
  • Previously created research deliverables, such as written reports, slide decks etc.
  • Have authored or collaborated on discussion guides for interview sessions, and conducted usability testing in a fast-paced environment.
  • Availability for global and domestic travel, although typically the vast majority of work is around London
  • Previous agency experience and visual design skills would be useful, but not essential
