How we are using multi-player testing to reveal how story, mechanics, and emotion shape a more engaging AAA title before launch.
The Challenge
A major game development studio, responsible for a hit entertainment franchise, selected us as their player research partner to support the development of their AAA title. Sutherland Labs was selected based on our expertise in player research and our ability to provide global research.
Our Approach
We designed and ran rounds of multi-player in-person playtesting using a custom built set of rigs and bespoke streaming setup. Each session supported 4+ players simultaneously, with dual video capture – gameplay screens and facial reactions – to track both behavior and emotion. In subsequent rounds players were able to register emotional responses as they played, producing real-time heatmaps as they progressed through the game.
Why did we design it this way? Accommodating multiple players in each session allowed us to get a broad view of how the game or level plays, and quickly uncover recurring issues when players get stuck, or any issues with mechanics.
The Outcomes
Using observation, surveys, and one-to-one interviews over multiple play sessions, our researchers are continuing to provide valuable insights that are shaping the game’s story, mechanics, and overall playability.
Could playtesting help boost your title’s chance of success?
