UX Masterclass 2023 – Designing Change in a Complex World

In September we joined our fellow UXalliance partners in Zaragoza, Spain for the 20th UXMasterclass – a day packed with UX insights! Organised by our Spanish partner Torresburriel Estudio and sponsored by iberCaja the theme for this year’s masterclass was how leaders can design change in a complex world – the six talks featured certainly delivered.

Insights throughout the day were captured by visual illustrator Javier Alonso Gomez, and are featured in our highlights below.

The Future of AI in UX: Insights from the Global Frontline

Presented by Lindsey DeWitt Prat, Senior UX Researcher and Bob Schumacher, Managing Partner from Bold Insight (US)

First up, a look into the risk (and reward) that generative AI may pose to UX research. Our speakers drew examples from a study conducted with UX researchers across 24 countries – examining adoption levels and attitudes towards using AI, as well as task suitability.

How leaders can better grasp future generations: A UX research perspective

Presented by Ayumu Takeuchi, Senior UX Researcher and Honoka Sumida, UX Researcher from Mitsue-Links (Japan)

In this fascinating talk our Japanese partners demonstrated the dangers of leaders engaging in ‘mold cutting’ to understand different markets – and underscored the benefits of UX research to better design for new generations and their values.

From Complexity to Clarity: Navigating the Journey around Inclusive Digital Finance

Presented by Chin Chin Burkolter, Director and Principal Consultant at Somia CX (Singapore/Indonesia)

Heading next to Indonesia, Somia CX shared insights from their work in Digital Finance Inclusion – specifically focussed on the unbanked and underbanked population working in agriculture (approximately 29% of the population). Delving into this study we learned how the many complex relationships and systems at play present barriers to using digital financial services. We can’t wait to see where this work leads.

Designing Change: Unlocking the Potential of Automotive UIs through Qualitative-Quantitative UX Benchmarking

Presented by Jan Panhoff, UX Consultant and Co-Owner, Uintent (Germany)

A welcome return to the stage for Uintent, who joined the UXalliance last year. Jan shared a model for Qualitative and Quantitative UX benchmarking designed specifically for the automotive industry. Among some of the challenges in designing the model – how to capture ‘real-world’ feedback without endangering the driver, or moderator!

Celebrating Differences, Igniting Change: The Power of Cultural Design in Solving our Biggest Challenges

Presented by Helga Stegmann, Founder Mantaray (Africa)

Last up, was a fascinating look at one of the fastest growing populations in the world – and the largest consumer market of the future. Helga revealed some of the insights they are seeing in their research in Africa – and the importance of understanding this cultural context in designing the products of the future.
